Do you prefer cotton or silk? We don’t have either…but we have better! Times have changed and so have our fabrics. Our eucalyptus silk is not only softer than traditional textiles, it also provides a vegan, eco-friendly alternative to microfiber, polyester, satin, bamboo viscose, conventional cotton, and traditional silk.
Traditional silk is made from the larvae of silk moths...YUCK! Each worm spins a continuous thread of silk as part of its metamorphosis into a moth. These threads are then harvested (i.e. stolen from the worm) and woven to make traditional silk fabric. This is why traditional silk is so expensive and definitely not vegan because millions of these poor worms are exploited for their cocoons, when all they want is to turn into moths! Furthermore, traditional silk production requires a huge amount of energy and fossil fuels because silk is traditionally made in hot countries, and the silk facilities require air conditioning that is running constantly. So, not only is traditional silk not vegan and not cool, it is also a big contributor to global warming.
Vegan eucalyptus silk, on the other hand, is a biodegradable cellulosic fiber made with certified sustainable eucalyptus, using highly resource-efficient technology. A single organic solvent is used to break down natural, renewable eucalyptus into buttery soft, ultra-smooth fibers. These fibers are then woven into fabric. Our eucalyptus silk fabric is “sateen” woven rather than knitted, which results in a shiny, smooth fabric that feels like a cross between very high thread-count cotton and silk.
With respect to thread count, our eucalyptus silk is 400TC, but eucalyptus silk is completely different from traditional bedding fabrics, in that just 200TC is actually softer than most of the highest thread count cotton available. It typically comes in 200-600 thread counts, and in our opinion, the best combination of softness and breathability is at 400TC. With 500-600TC, the difference in softness is imperceptible, and you actually lose some of the fabric's breathing properties due to the higher number of threads and therefore less permeable material. If you have sensitive skin, our fabric is among the most hypoallergenic bedding available. It is natural, dye-free, chemical-free, anti-static, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-microbial, which results in fresher feeling skin and hair when you wake up!
